What Is IFS Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy developed by Richard Schwartz that views the mind as made up of different “parts.” Instead of one fixed identity, you have an internal system — like a family — where each part has its own role.
For perfectionists, common parts might include:
The Inner Critic pushing you to do better
The Overachiever trying to stay ahead of mistakes
The Avoider procrastinating to escape failure
The Anxious Part worried about disappointing others
In IFS, these parts aren’t enemies. They formed to protect you, often early in life, even if their strategies now feel exhausting.
At the center of this system is your Self: the calm, compassionate, curious part of you that can understand and heal the rest.
The Core Idea
IFS is built on a simple belief: there are no bad parts.
That harsh perfectionist voice? It may be trying to protect you from criticism or rejection. Instead of fighting or silencing it, IFS helps you understand what it’s afraid of and what it needs.
When parts feel heard and supported, they often relax their extreme roles.
What Happens in an IFS Session?
IFS sessions are typically slow, reflective, and experiential. With guidance from your therapist, you might:
Notice which parts show up around a challenge (e.g., procrastination or self-criticism).
Get curious about what those parts are trying to protect you from.
Build a more compassionate relationship with them.
Over time, help parts release old burdens like shame, fear, or pressure.
Clients often describe the experience as “like meditation mixed with inner dialogue.”
What IFS Can Help With
IFS is particularly helpful for struggles perfectionists often face:
chronic self-criticism
anxiety and burnout
trauma or complex trauma
depression
relationship patterns
low self-worth
compulsive behaviors (like overworking or people-pleasing)
The Goal
The goal of IFS isn’t to eliminate parts like the inner critic or the achiever.
It’s to help them trust your Self enough to soften, so your motivation comes from clarity and care — not pressure or fear.
